What it is
Search Analytics for WP is a free WordPress plugin. It records what visitors type into your site’s search box and how many results each search found, and shows you the popular terms and the searches that came up empty. Everything is stored in your own WordPress database, with no account and no outside analytics service.
It has been in the WordPress.org plugin directory since March 2018, and runs on 3,000+ sites today.
Why it exists
A site’s search box is one of the few places where visitors say exactly what they want, in their own words. Most analytics tools don’t show it, or bury it. Searches with no results are the most useful part: each one is a page that’s missing, or a page that uses different words than your visitors do. The plugin puts that list in front of you.
Who makes it
The plugin is written and maintained by Cornel Raiu, a WordPress developer. The code is open source under the GPL, and developed in the open on GitHub, where you can read it, report issues and send pull requests. Security reports go through Patchstack’s disclosure program.
Search Analytics Pro, a paid version with features on top of the free plugin, is in the works. The Pro waitlist decides what gets built first. The free plugin stays free.
